COACHING

About Tom

A LIFE WITH MORE THAN ONE CHAPTER
My interest in coaching grew out of a longstanding fascination with psychology, human development and the choices we make about our lives.
For many years my professional identity was as a lawyer. Eventually I began asking some of the same questions that now bring people to my coaching practice:
What else might I do?
What parts of myself haven't had enough room?
And what would make the next part of life meaningful?
I completed the Hudson Institute of Coaching's Coach Certification Program in 2001 and began coaching shortly thereafter.
Hudson has been a significant part of my professional community for approximately 25 years.
For 19 years, I facilitated LifeForward, Hudson's experiential program for people exploring transitions and meaningful change. The program brought together people at many different points in their lives but with a common desire: to step outside the momentum of everyday life long enough to ask where they were headed and whether that was still where they wanted to go.
For the past 15 years, I have facilitated and taught in Hudson's coach-training program.
I have also worked as a coaching supervisor for approximately 12 years and have been trained in supervision by Ashridge Executive Education and the Coaching Supervision Academy in London.
An important part of my work has focused specifically on the transition from a substantial career into whatever comes next.
I currently serve as one of the facilitators of The Bonus Round at Modern Elder Academy's campuses in Santa Fe and Baja. The program brings together people who are moving away from significant careers and exploring how they want to shape the next stage of their lives.
For several years, I also facilitated a program for partners at PricewaterhouseCoopers as they approached retirement, helping them think beyond the end of their professional roles and begin constructing a bridge to the life that would follow.
Before coaching, I practiced law and was a partner at Irell & Manella in Los Angeles, focusing primarily on white-collar criminal defense. I received my B.A. from Brown University and my J.D. from New York University School of Law.
The two careers may look quite different.
To me, however, there has been a common thread: curiosity about people—their stories, their choices, the ways they change, and the possibilities they sometimes cannot yet see for themselves.
Today my coaching practice is devoted to personal development and life transition, with a particular interest in people asking how do I create the life I want after work is no longer the primary focus.
